A Shift from Law Enforcement to Political Punditry
Bongino, 50, began his career in law enforcement with the New York Police Department in the 1990s before joining the Secret Service. He served under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama before transitioning to conservative media, where he became a vocal supporter of Trump. Over the years, he has built a loyal following, using his platform to promote Trump’s policies and narratives.
Although Bongino previously ran for public office, including a U.S. Senate seat in Maryland in 2012 and congressional seats in 2014 and 2016, he was unsuccessful in all three races. His greatest success has come through The Dan Bongino Show, a widely popular podcast on Spotify.
Bongino’s Role in Pro-Trump Narratives
Bongino has been a central figure in the Make America Great Again movement and has frequently spread unverified claims about the 2020 election, alleging widespread voter fraud. He has also questioned the FBI’s integrity, including accusing the agency of covering up information about the suspect responsible for planting pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters before the January 6 Capitol riot.
Additionally, he has perpetuated conspiracy theories about the FBI's 2022 search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, falsely suggesting that the Biden administration was attempting to assassinate the former president. He has openly criticized the Justice Department and FBI leadership, advocating for mass firings of agents involved in investigations related to Trump and his allies.
Trump’s Praise for Bongino
Trump announced Bongino’s appointment in a social media post, calling him a “man of incredible love and passion for our country.” He expressed confidence in the new FBI leadership under Bongino, Patel, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, vowing that “fairness, justice, law, and order will be brought back to America.”
Bongino responded on social media by thanking Trump, Bondi, and Patel for their support, reinforcing his commitment to leading the agency in line with Trump’s vision.
Concerns Over Bongino’s Appointment
Bongino’s appointment has sparked widespread concerns within the intelligence community. According to reports from NBC News, multiple FBI officials have privately expressed alarm over his lack of experience and his history of spreading conspiracy theories. Traditionally, the deputy director oversees day-to-day operations and manages the 55 field offices across the country, making experience in FBI leadership crucial for the role.
The FBI Agents Association, a group representing current and retired special agents, has not publicly commented on the appointment. However, an internal memo suggested that the deputy director should be an active FBI special agent, highlighting the need for operational expertise, experience, and trust within the bureau.
Bongino Takes Office Amid FBI Overhaul
Bongino steps into leadership at a time of significant upheaval within the FBI. His predecessor, Christopher Wray, resigned in December after serving seven years of his ten-year term, anticipating that Trump would remove him if he remained in office. Wray cited concerns about the politicization of the bureau and its growing entanglement in partisan conflicts.
Trump has long been critical of the FBI, particularly for its role in investigating his handling of classified documents and the January 6 Capitol riot. On his first day back in office, he granted pardons to more than 1,500 individuals convicted in connection to the riot and has since pushed for the removal of agents involved in those cases. His Justice Department has requested the names of thousands of FBI personnel linked to the January 6 investigations, raising fears of widespread purges within the agency.
Bongino and Patel will replace acting FBI leaders Brian Driscoll and Robert Kissane, marking a dramatic shift in leadership as Trump reshapes the bureau to align with his administration’s vision.
